The first step to recovering anything of value is to recognize a problem might exist. A problem can't be recognized if it is not compared against something better. In a society of murderers, for instance, killing seems normal. Willful blindness even when the better alternative is presented is another problem where our traditions and comfort blind us to what is in front of us. After these are overcome, the real difficulty finally starts. In freedom lies total responsibility, and it can be both liberating and difficult to bear.
